  • UNBLOCKING A TOILET

Tools required :- Plunger, flexible drain spring or chemical solution.

Safety tip :- Wear rubber gloves when unblocking the toilet, safety goggles too if you are using a chemical drain / toilet unblocking solution and have a window and door open for ventilation of any fumes it may give off.

This surprisingly, does not come very high on my favourite DIY jobs to do list , but it is a job that has to be carried out every now and then. The first thing to try is to use an old fashioned plunger to dislodge the blockage, it may not work straight away so persevere for a few minutes before giving up.

You can purchase a flexible drain cleaning spring which are usually very effective as they will push through round the u bend to the toilet waste pipe.

The last option is to use a chemical drain / toilet unblocking solution, don’t forget the gloves, goggles and good ventilation. These solutions are normally poured into the toilet bowl and left for a specific length of time before the toilet is flushed and hopefully the blockage has been removed.

The plunger, drain spring and chemical solution can all be purchased from your local DIY store.

If all these methods fail then the problem could be further down the waste / sewerage pipe and will require further investigation.

Don’t forget to clean and disinfect any equipment you have used once you have finished using it.
