  • PAINTING WOODWORK.

Once you have prepared the woodwork for painting (see post), seal any bare wood with a coat of wood primer. If you decide that the colour change will be very different from the original paint that is already present, as an example, painting skirting boards white that are at present green then use an undercoat, preferably one the (top coat) paint manufacturer recommends.

If you need to pull back any carpet away from skirting boards, give the floor a quick brush or vac to remove any dust that will otherwise end up stuck to the paint on your brush .Apply the paint with a suitable size brush for the job, don’t overload the brush with too much paint and paint the wood in the direction of the grain. Paint with smooth strokes and try to finish off with light brush strokes. Complete each section of woodwork without stopping for any length of time as this can create joint lines on the paintwork.

If you are painting woodwork in a room that will eventually be wallpapered, it is worthwhile painting approximately 1″ (25mm) of the wall around window frames, architraves and above skirting boards aswell, then when you hang and trim the wallpaper to the edge of the woodwork, any cuts that aren’t quite right will be hidden by the painted wall behind. When the painting is finished, clean the paint brushes as soon as you can to give the paint less time to dry on the bristles.
