We love to create and improve; it’s just a human condition. The downside is that we are never totally content with the fruits of our labour and, as fashions change, we plod on with endless improvements.
What is your big home project going to be this year? I would suggest building a bar to house a comprehensive whiskey collection. Your significant other may feel different, however, and i’m sure you have both discussed in depth which room should receive attention.
The most popular room to receive a renovation in the spring is the living room. Perhaps it is because we have been forced to spend a lot of time in there over the dreary wet winter, that we notice how dull the room has become.
So the living room will be your target this year, and you are aiming for the contemporary look that is in all of the magazines currently. It is a big project to take on and is likely to be expensive so brace yourself.
Flooring
A crisp, clean, floor is a huge part of the design, and laminate flooring fits this role perfectly. Hard flooring though, can be very cold underfoot. Thankfully, the solution to this comes in the form of underfloor heating. Underfloor heating is the most effective source of warmth that a room can have. Heat rises and, therefore, every part of your body and the room benefits from it. Either electric elements or pipework connected to the central heating system can provide the heat. If your renovation is going to be perfect, dig up your floor to lay the heating elements or pipes and pour in a new one. You can then lay the laminate flooring.
Furniture
Maybe you have noticed in the modern rooms that the furniture is of a geometric design and the individual pieces don’t necessarily match. Select corner sofas and chairs in neutral shades to maintain the clean lines of the design. A few high-gloss wooden coffee tables and a matching bookcase will dress your room perfectly.
Lighting
The lighting solutions widely available to us all today make the job of illuminating our room simple. I suggest that you make good use of small LED recessed fittings in the ceiling. Fit as many as you think your room needs. If there is a high number, install them on two or three separate, dimmable, circuits. Then the mood can be changed with the turn of a switch.
Table lamps can be used to great effect in your modern room. Ever versatile they can be moved around whenever the mood takes you. Modern design mean that table lamps will fit right into your scheme.
Decor
It is best to paint the walls a neutral shade or white. This gives a suitable background for a few select pieces of artwork and the interesting lighting effects that you are aiming for.
Fire
Spend a good chunk of your budget on a feature fireplace. You will know the best one when you see it. Beautiful plain marble examples can be found that will house ultra-modern real flame gas fires. Choose the best design without worrying about how efficient the fire is because you have underfloor heating to keep you warm.
After completing the above projects, you will have a stunning room to work with. Accessorise your new room with window blinds or modern drapes, and soft furnishings. In no time at all you will find yourself relaxing with a glass of wine and watching Downton Abbey. That antique scheme looks good don’t you think?
