Are you a keen DIY fan looking for a challenge? If so, maybe you should consider installing a new bathroom (related: how much do it cost to install a new bathroom) in your home which will potentially increase its value and make it easier to sell should you choose to.
Fitting a new bathroom is not very difficult; making it look good is. There are jobs, such as tiling, which are best left to a professional unless you are very good at it yourself. Bad tiling will cheapen the room and can even lower the value of your home.
If you are still determined to proceed with the project, here is the process you should follow.
Empty the Room
First of all you need a blank canvas to work on. Therefore, rip out the old suite, remove the old tiles, and lift any existing flooring materials. The room will now look in a sorry state. Don’t worry, things will soon change.
Plumbing
If the suite is remaining in the same position, money will be saved on altering drainage. Most bathroom upgrades require the addition of a shower cubicle, so the furniture may need to be moved around to accommodate this. The waste water plumbing must be altered to suit the new positions. Floorboards must be lifted to hide the pipework unless it is to be boxed in later, which is a common solution.
Hot and cold water feeds must be installed to the new positions.
Electricity
There is nothing to bar you from installing the first fix wiring yourself. If you are in any doubt about the size of cables or method of installation, consult a professional for advice. Consider the following items when installing wiring;
- Main lighting - This is often in the form of recessed lights in the ceiling. Wire them to a switch outside the room if you wish them to be dimmed
- Shower lighting
- Task lighting - This light source should be placed either side of the vanity mirror
- Decorative lighting - This may be an illuminated bath panel, tiles, or even skirting boards. There are some great products out there
Extractor Fan
Are you fitting an extractor fan? It makes a lot of sense as they quickly and easily draw out moisture from the bathroom, which prevents condensation and mould. It’s not much of an issue if you have a window and remember to open it after showering, but if you have a windowless bathroom, it’s worth giving the matter some serious thought.
Walls
Plaster the walls. They don’t need to be perfect because they are going to be tiled, but they do need to be level if a good finish is to be achieved.
Install the Suite
Install the toilet, bath, bathroom vanities and connect the services. Try to leave as much packaging on them as possible to help protect them through the rest of the project.
Tile the Walls and Floor
Everything depends on a high quality tile installation. A mistake here will stand out like a sore thumb. Take your time and work meticulously. Patience is rewarded.
Second Fix
The lighting and shower installation are next on the list. If you are able to install all of the fittings and connect them yourself do so. Call an electrician in to test, inspect, and make the final connections.
The final jobs are to install mirrors, towel rails, and any other accessories required and the project is complete. The whole process can take about two weeks to complete in total. It will obviously take much longer if you are not working on it full time.
Fitting a new bathroom is one of the most satisfying jobs to do around the home as a great deal of care is needed on the finishing touches. Anyone can do it; have a go yourself. You will be glad you did.
