DIY Storage Tips for the Bedroom

Last Updated: April 20, 2016

Wake-up to an organised bedroom with our DIY storage tips. Take advantage of the space you have and make use of the materials lying around your house.

We often prioritise the bedroom last on our list of things to revamp, renovate or rejuvenate. It’s not a room that we have on display and this can mean that we just don’t think about it even though we spend nearly fifty percent of our time in our bedroom.

An organised bedroom free from clutter can be the secret to a good night’s rest and the start of a good day. So it can be well worth spending a little time using your DIY skills and these tips to find new and innovative ways to organise the bedroom.

Vertical Space

First, you want to look at the space you have. Of course you’ve considered your floor space, but what about the wall space? If you have high ceilings, it’s definitely worth thinking about installing shelving.

There are many ways to do this, from flat-pack shelving units and even building shelves into the wall recess. This vertical space is great for displaying items like books and ornaments but also for hiding away boxes of knick-knacks.

Consider using bedroom furniture that offers a lot of storage options like dressers and tallboys. As Brosa explains, a vertical tallboy is great for storing your clothes and takes up minimal floor space.

Dead Space

As I said you’ve probably considered floor space, but what about under the bed. There are many ways to utilise the dead space under your bed. You can build drawers on wheels or whole new beds, or invest in a bed with built-in storage.

Gas-lift storage beds are a great way to utilise the space. There are many options for storing some of your bulkier items, and items like linen, winter coats, and shoes. Evaluate your storage needs, to figure out the best option for you.

Dividing your Space

To keep your bedroom organised it’s best to make it easy for you to tidy up. Dividing space in your wardrobe and drawers will not only make it easier to find everything but also make it easier to put it away.

Drawer dividers are easy enough to make yourself, and you can make them out of material you have lying around. Use cardboard for a quick and easy DIY project or see if you have any space particle board lying around and put your power jigsaw to good use.

Drawer dividers will give you a place for everything, making it easier for you to keep your wardrobe neat and organised.

Be Creative

As we’ve already discussed in our guide on saving space in the bathroom you need to get creative when it comes to storage. Have a look around your house for some ideas on creative ways to store your items and utilise space.

Do you have an old wooden ladder? Spruce it up and you can display your shoes, scarves and pot-plants. Or get a small tree branch, spray paint it and hang your jewellery and trinkets. There are so many things around your home that you can repurpose and use for storage that are both handy and striking!
