The Problem with Leaks
Leaks, no matter how small, can leave permanent structural damage on your home. You need to make sure that you are fixing the problem quickly so that you don’t cause irreparable damage.
Here are the three most common leakage problems with dishwashers and how to fix the problem.
Defective Water Pumps
Usually, the cause of the leak is a defective pump. The pump is what circulates the water around the dishwasher. They can break due to wear and tear. Sometimes, the rubber gasket is not adequate for excessive use. Remove the panel at the front of the dishwasher to reveal the rubber gasket. Simply untwist in an anti-clockwise motion and remove it. Replace it as necessary.
Water Inlet Valve
The water inlet valve can cause problems with a dishwasher and cause it to leak. The valve is located behind the kick panel. This is usually at the bottom of the dishwasher.
Turn off the mains and ensure that the electrical current is not flowing. Leave the door open to ensure that you can access the valve with ease. The water inlet valve is easy to spot, it’s a device with the main hoses leading off it. One tube feeds water into the appliance; the other house is to drain water away.
Disconnect the hose from the valve. Check for signs of damage. This can be wear and tear or cracks in the rubber. Make sure that you have a bucket to catch any water that may come from the hose.
There should be wires holding the valve in place. Disconnect them. Remove the screws holding the valve in place. Remove the valve and replace with a new one. Appliance parts can be sought cheaply online, so you don’t have to worry about cost. Replace the wires, hose and kick plate to resolve the leak.
Spray Arm
A spray arm is how water is ejected into the main body of the dishwasher. These can become fragile with excessive use. They are also a common problem with leaks in dishwashers. As they are made from plastic, they are likely to crack, however, you can replace them easily.
Remove the plastic spray arms and clear the blockage that has occurred. Blockages from food are standard but they are easily remedied. Rotate the spray arm to loosen debris. Some are held in place with a plastic retainer. These can be removed with ease. Unblock and the leak is gone.
