VonHaus Oscillating Multi Tool with 15 Piece Accessory Set and Carry Case - A Review

Disclosure: This product was donated for review purposes. It’s an honest and unbiased assesment of the VonHaus Oscillating Multi Tool with 15 piece accessory set and carry case, which is currently available at Amazon.

This is the first time I have used this type of tool for DIY. The price at the time of writing is £25  (with a RRP of £89.99) so it is priced very competively at around 50% less than other models currently available.

As you can see in the picture below, it comes with a strong, plastic carrying case, operating instructions and a useful selection of sanding and cutting tools, which are easily interchangeable using the Allen key provided.

Here’s a shot of the tool out of the box, and below that, the accessories.

The number of accessories may be small, but they are versatile and can be used on many DIY jobs around the home.

Stainless Steel Scraper

  • Ideal for removing old vinyl, wood or other floor coverings, paint and coatings, residues and separating laminated layers.
  • Cuts carpet.
  • Removes adhesive residue from floor coverings and other stubborn substances.

Universal E-Cutter (End Cutter)

  • Cuts through ferrous metals, and wood.
  • A Plunge cutting depth of 40mm.
  • Hardened teeth will cut ferrous metals such as nails and pipes.

Half Moon Saw

  • Cuts through wood, laminates, plastic, carpet and plaster board.
  • Plunge cut to the edge of another material at 90⁰ due to the half-moon shape.

Sanding Pad & Sheets

  • Triangular sanding sheets for corners and detailed sanding.
  • The perfect tool for sanding and profiling.
  • Sand larger surfaces with a variety of gritted sheets

Using the tool

The VonHaus Oscillating Multi Tool is very handy for making cuts in awkward places, and making small cuts in timber and laminate flooring.

The scraper is good at removing dried drops of glue and paint (even the ones that have been around for years!), and the range of sanding pads, which again are easily interchangeable, are small and well-shaped for getting into those awkward corners.

One thing I would have liked to have seen is a screw on handle to keep the tool a little more steady during use. Also, I found it easier to change the cutting tools/blades with the tool sitting in the carrying case face up so I could use both hands.

Having only used the tool for a short time, the life of the cutting balde is unknown. I have seen 38 piece replacement sets for around £15, which are in my opinion, very good value. They sometimes come with a wider range of cutting blades, smaller sanding pads and grinding attachments, which I think would be really useful for removing tile grout.

To prolong blade life don’t let the blades get too hot from continuous cutting of any material, let them cool off a little between cuts.

Conclusion

This is one of those tools I would use every now and then, rather than on every DIY project. For the cost and it’s usefulness when needed, it would make an excellent addition to most people’s DIY toolkit. I only wish I had this a month ago when I had to remove a section of skirting board on a professional job, I know it would have saved me a lot of time and effort!

There are lots of positive reviews on Amazon too, so plenty of other people share my opinion.
